Heartstrings: Short Film Captures the Exact Moment a Love Ends
Heartstrings: An emotional film about the story of life. A journey that pulls at the heart and reveals a silent truth.
Through our lives we are often faced with tough emotional choices. Choices that go against what we truly want but still need to be made. Somewhere along the course of life we lose sight of the things we love and the people we care about. We become shells, existing in a mundane reality guided by patterns rather than purpose. The spark of life is replaced by stagnation, passion replaced by passivity. We simply continue because we don’t know how to stop.
In this state of monotony, our world is turned upside-down. We stop investing in the things we enjoy and stop appreciating the people we love. One begins chasing ideals, forgetting to nurture the things once treasured. We get so caught up in the lack and the want for more; losing all recollection of what a peaceful life feels like. Eventually the life we know and cherished deeply falls apart. We are faced with the repercussions of our apathy and only then do we see the damage we have done.
Heartstrings
A movie that perfectly depicts the subdued emotions that come with this state of detachment is ‘Heartstrings’ by Setups & Payoffs Studios. The film captures a couple’s last moments together at the end of their relationship. Their relationship has reached a standstill that neither of them knows how to overcome, though they might want to. How things got to this stage is unknown, perhaps even to them. They are silenced partly by fear of escalation and partly not knowing what to say.
The beauty of ‘Heartstrings’ lies in its silence. The producer, Samarth Garg, provided insights on their approach to this silent story-telling. Being a film with almost no dialogues, they focused on performance, blocking and subtext to convey their message. No dialogues meant everything had to be meticulously planned and executed. The ambient sound is truly spectacular, proving a lot of effort and dedication have gone to this creation. The emotional stance of the characters is conveyed through the background sound. The actors, Snehal Kalpana and Rahat Jain, who is also the director, have delivered a stunning performance as Kalki and Tanmay. They communicate their characters’ sentiments through small gestures that leave a lasting impact. The smallest gestures like pouring water carry deep significance in the film.
The Journey
Samarth Garg, the producer and Rahat Jain, the director of the film, share a love for stories about ordinary people. With a common goal in mind, they set up their production company Setups & Payoffs Studios. Their first collaboration was on the short film ‘Aparichit’. As a team, they focus on the story, using craft as a tool rather than a diversion. Their vision is to bring diverse, unique stories to their platform. Each project is taken as a challenge, with different story themes that resonate with their audience. Their creative partnership is built on years of collaboration, rooted in trust and honest feedback. This mutual understanding allows them to stay true to the story while refining it together.
The script was initially written by Rahat Jain and reworked by Samarth Garg, based on real-life observation and personal reflection. The emotional honesty of the film encouraged them to take on the challenge of a non-dialogue movie. ‘Heartstrings’ is a moment of awakening, caught between what your heart desires and the decision you feel compelled to take. The movie conveys emotional truths about silent, unannounced endings and the acceptance that comes with it. Despite time constraints, the entire crew went above and beyond to bring the story to life. Their efforts were rewarded when they watched the final edit and unanimously knew their vision had come to life.
A Story Crafted Through Dedication
Through our conversation with producer Samarth Garg, the solidarity of their team is evident. Each has played a crucial role in the success of the film. Their discipline and commitment to storytelling have crafted a subtle, heartfelt masterpiece. Through his experience, Samarth Garg advises aspiring producers to always protect the story irrespective of the budget. As a producer, he advises focusing on taking decisions that serve the narrative instead of compromising it. He also advises trusting your collaborators, which is apparent in his appreciation of his crew.
The director, Rahat Jain, played multiple roles in executing their intended vision. His devotion and sincerity are evident in every role he played. The team have expressed their joy in creating movies that resonate with their audience. They aim to experiment with different tones and genres, refusing to confine themselves. Every challenge they face becomes worthwhile if their films can offer comfort and make viewers feel less alone.

Ek Badalav: Hidden Danger of Looking Away
Ek Badalav: taking action in a neighbourhood stops harm; staying safe means not ignoring crime. Choose to step up.
It is often said that “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” The quote rightly reveals how society’s stance directly affects the crime happening around them. Most people live with the belief of overlooking wrong doings to “stay safe”, that any interference would do more harm than good. They turn a blind eye hoping to remain protected. It isn’t so much about not caring what happens to others but more about being too afraid to endanger themselves. So they make excuses or justify their actions to themselves, all the while carrying suppressed guilt.
Does avoidance really keep us safe though? Does turning a blind eye mean we’re protected? Or are we just deferring the danger? Ignoring or walking away from a crime should never be preferred. Even if no personal harm is caused, turning away is a bigger price to pay. Ignoring offenses mean indirectly supporting them. Even if our intentions aren’t to do so, avoiding action against such acts only encourages them further. It takes one brave person to speak up and spark change, but when silence continues, the problem grows deeper. Real change starts when individuals understand that staying quiet isn’t neutral; it means becoming part of the problem.
Ek Badalav
Ek Badalav is a short film produced by PS Motion films that depicts the social issues faced in a neighbourhood. The movie shows the effects of side-lining issues, avoiding taking action and the ultimate effects of such intimidation. The characters of the film are part of a neighbourhood plagued with injustice and exploitation. A group of delinquents go about terrorizing the residents, spreading unnecessary fear and insecurity. There isn’t any particular motive behind their actions, except for the illusion of importance and power.
What’s worse though, is that the public helplessly go along with these atrocities. Each too afraid to step in, unsupported by the masses who also fear retaliation. Their silence only perpetuates the offenses, feeding the egos of the perpetrators. Their hesitation is understandable but their lack of intervention only makes things worse. Ek Badalav highlights the issues faced by the common public with its powerful story-telling. The movie has achieved success and recognition across social media platforms. Viewers appreciate the honest depiction of the reality of society and the call to action.
False Sense of Security
The main motive behind overlooking and ignoring these acts is the public’s need for safety. They believe that avoiding intervention means they are out of harm’s way. In truth, it just means they are delaying and intensifying the harm to themselves. With each illegal act ignored and every opportunity to intervene passed up, the offenders grow increasingly empowered. Their “petty crimes” turn into felonies, making it harder to overlook.
Ek Badalav shows the growing agitation and increasing tension in the neighbourhood. No one truly remains safe under such avoidance. The victims change and the intensity of the crime increases, but it remains a crime all the same. Innocent people become partakers in these wrongdoings simply due to their passivity.
The film shows that being a “hero” isn’t always extravagant displays of bravery, but taking action against injustice. Stepping up when the time comes is far more appreciated than extraordinary superpowers. By speaking up and taking responsibility, each of us can contribute to a safer, more accountable community. The choice to act is not just a personal decision, it is a statement that injustice will not be allowed.

Decoding the Father-Daughter Bond in the Award-Winning Film ‘Tokri’
Tokri, a film about love and compassion, and the quiet relationship between a father and child, carried gently like a basket.
We rush through our lives, making decisions as lights turn green and clocks tick on. We brush people off, turn down little voices, brush aside the moments that appear inconvenient or small. In our rush to get somewhere else, we seldom stop to consider how our actions will have impact on the people, environment, economy and the society. Sometimes a throwaway sentence or impatient gesture has harsher and harder impact than we intend to and we only know the weight once the moment has gone. Regret slips in softly. We play the moment back and notice for the first time what we ignored in the rush – the disappointment in the corner of an eye; the effort that has been put into a small gift; the love that is sitting underneath the error.
We want to go back and offer more patience, kindness and awareness and yet now the damage has been done. However, regret can also bring us back into responsibility; lead us out of the door to mend what we have broken, to return to the world with humility and sensitivity. In acknowledging our thoughtlessness, we come to learn the importance of empathy and the quiet courage to fix it.
Tokri
Tokri (The Basket) is an animated short film, directed by Mr. Suresh Eriyat. The film has no dialogue, instead using gestures and detailed expressions to portray the action. Tokri has earned the Best Animation Film award during the National Film Awards. The story explores the theme of human relationships, compassion and all of the challenges that come with everyday living. It has depicted through the life of the people within a miniature world.
The film Tokri tells the story of a young girl, whose life is influenced by family, duty and a mistake, she never intended to make. When she leaves the safety of her home, she has both an emotional and physical burden to carry. The themes of guilt, determination and strength are presented in the film. The film portrays the delicate relationship between the parents and the child and how seemingly small acts can have great impacts and consequences.
The Role of a Father
In Tokri, the relationship between the father and the daughter is established through subtle gestures, rather than through words, spoken aloud. The father figures are often their child’s first source of safety and strength. They provide reassurance to their children. The father’s presence in the daughter’s life serves as an anchor in the world, filled with uncertainty and unpredictability. This relationship has a delicate balance of authority as well as tenderness.
What makes the father-daughter relationship truly powerful is its quiet steadfastness, as it has no need for grand gestures to signify its existence. It grows through mutual glances, through the unspoken understanding of the other and through the mutual desire to keep each other safe and protected. Even at times of guilt or miscommunication, the father-daughter relationship can withstand the test of time. At the root of the relationship is trust, sacrifice and unconditional love for each other.
Compassion and Forgiveness
The smallest, quietest moments of compassion can be thought of as the motive behind the other person’s actions. When we start looking at someone’s mistake differently and see the intention behind that mistake, a bond of understanding is formed. We have to look past our frustration and see what might have been motivating them to act the way they did. Therefore, instead of reacting to them with anger, we are able to respond to them with patience. Instead of holding onto blame, we give them a chance to grow.
Forgiveness does not change the past. It simply changes the meaning, given to those actions by turning guilt into learning and regret into responsibility. We can acknowledge the pain that was created from the past. If we choose to forgive, we are not going to allow that pain to define our relationship. We will allow ourselves to have another opportunity for redemption, another chance to make things right and another opportunity to rebuild our trust.
The film Tokri teaches us that compassion is what strengthens a relationship. The film shows that when you encounter someone, who is vulnerable, you have an opportunity to be kind to them. We all make mistakes and we all fall down at times. When we practice empathy and forgiveness, our relationships can become stronger. Our love does not show us that we are perfect. Our love shows us that we have the ability to understand, to accept and to grow together.
