Janmashtami: Artistic Dedications To Celebrate Lord Krishna’s Birthday

Published

on

Krishna by Madhavi Tuli

Radhe Krishna, Hare Krishna! Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare! Wishing you and your family a very happy Janmashtami!

In Indian mythology, it is believed that Lord Vishnu returns to earth in troubled times and restore the balance of good and evil. This age-old mythological belief is celebrated as Janmashtami, when “the pure, infinite consciousness was born as Krishna to eliminate the evil and revive the goodness.”

Janmashtami or Gokulashtami marks the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He was born to Devaki and Vasudeva. It is celebrated with great fervor with grand celebrations in Mathura and Vrindavan.

This Janmashtami, we bring some creative dedications by some incredible artists including Madhavi Tuli, Rahul Arya and Vishal Mitra.

O sakhi, look… today, how mesmerized our Kishori ju is, while looking at her Bihari ju. She is spellbound by his magical intoxicating beauty. He plays his flute only for her, as if nothing else exists for him. The rivers of love are pouring from the golden holes of his vanshi (flute) and hypnotizing our Shyama ju. Her heart is melting and dancing to those sweet tunes of love. Wah wah… . You know sakhi, he gazes into the depth of her brilliant eyes while composing the best melody of his love. She is so pleased by hearing every single tune played for her only, that tears of love are rolling on her cheeks and emanating incomparable charm and beauty. She is captivated by every single movement of his delicate hands, which are dancing a magical dance on the vanshi. . Look, she starts to dance… She’s looking at his gorgeous hair, which is fluttering in the soft wind, and she’s losing her steps, intoxicated by her endless feelings for him. Her every step is an amazing art. With her bodily movements, she’s painting around her an artistic masterpiece of her love for him. Every movement of her arms and legs are incomparable to anything we know. Flowers of divine love are emanating from her heart and levitating around her divine body. It looks like her beauty has multiplied unlimited times and her golden rays light up the whole kunj with the brightest golden light of love. . Sakhi, it’s incredible how fortunate we are, to witness such a moment of divine love. Priya Priyatam are so kind. They are showering their grace. I feel enormous gratitude to them and to our Guru Acharyas, who have given us unlimited grace and the most precious present, which is priceless and can never be paid back. Their grace is unconditional and full of endless love. . Let our sweet Kishori ju bless with her sidelong glance every soul who desires the eternal seva of Priya Priyatam, by giving them glimpses and entrance into the divine realm of her Dham. Today in Shri Nitya Nikunj Dham, a flower decoration festival is going on. Every plant is full of jewel-like shining flowers. So many kinds of flowers and unlimited numbers of extremely beautiful and colorful flower garlands are decorating all of Shri Nitya Vrindavan Dhyam. Shyama ju is so much fascinated by that beauty that she can’t stop gazing at every single flower. Bihari ju is also enchanted and saying to his Pyari ju: My dear love, I see how happy you are to see this beauty. But all this gorgeousness compared to your beauty is nothing. It can’t be even compared to the unlimited supreme exquisiteness of the tiniest part of your delicate shadow. This beauty all around us is but a tiny decoration of your gorgeous incomparable brilliance. My dearest love, your exquisiteness is increasing every moment. Every new moment, you are adorned with new freshness, new splendor, sweetness, charm, softness, delicacy… Every second you offer me the best excitement and satisfaction. With every breath, you succeed in making me fall in love with you, again and again. This happens to me every second of every single day. Expertly, you make my heart beat only for you. I don’t know anybody else but you who has such magnificent influence on me my love. All the sakhis, manjaris, sahelis and sahacharis are playing a soft melodious raga with many instruments and making Bihari ju cherish even more, her unlimited supreme gorgeousness. All of a sudden Kishori ju looks above in the sky and, totally fascinated, jumps up out of happiness. At this moment, a shower of delicate white flower petals falls down from a diamond tree and Shyama Shyam appear like in a magical cloud of white beauty. The petals are landing on their shiny hairs, skirts, hands, feet and everywhere. O sakhi, we are all spellbound and enjoying this magical moment in its fullness. Shri Shyama Shyam are sweetly joking with great joy while teasing each other about who the winner of their Chausar game is. Such sweetness is spreading around, that all the flowers of the surrounding trees are turning towards them and releasing their gorgeous fragrance of love. Wah… what a scene! Shri Shyama ju is playfully waving the last Chausar figure in front of Bihari ju`s lovely eyes and saying: Look! I`m taking your last figure and I am the winner! All of a sudden he caught her hand and delicately put it on his heart and he looked deeply in her eyes. In the pupils of her gorgeous mirror like eyes, he saw the reflection of his effulgent face and suddenly felt totally helpless. With tears in his eyes, he thought that his Kishori ju had just disappeared and he was now sitting there alone. At the same time, Shyama ju saw her own reflection in Bihari ju`s eyes, and like two innocent children, with sweet broken voices and eyes full of tears, they both said: Ohh… where is my Pyari ju? Where is my Bihari ju? Then the ashta sakhis came from that beautiful garden of pink flowers, carrying delicious, aromatic food offerings and thought they should immediately do something; otherwise, if Priya Pritam stay in that position for a while, they will rich the mahabhava state and then it would be very difficult, to bring them back to their senses. Shri Shuk sakhi ju took their hands in hers and said with a sweet voice full of love: My dearest Shyama Shyam, you are the treasure of my life. My sweethearts, look, you are sitting next to each other. Then Bihari ju realized that his Pyari ju is right in front of him and he laid her head on his delicate shoulder. They couldn’t get enough of each other’s feelings of love… All the Sakhis blissfully sang jai hoo! And the wind brought flowers from that radiant pink garden. The pleasant fragrant breeze is carrying the lovely rose petals and bringing cooling refreshment to our Shyama Shyam. They are totally immersed in their loving feelings and looking into each other’s hearts. The shawl of Bihari ju and the dupatta (upper shawl) of Shyama ju`s dress are fluttering in the soft breeze, increasing their immense beauty and making them look even more charming and more attractive. The tenderness and softness of their touch is like the touch of a very delicate flower. Shri Shuk sakhi ju says: “O manjari, look how Bihari ju is holding the hands of our Pyari ju. He is so gentle and caring to her, that it feels like he’s holding the most delicate rose flower, which, even when it’s touched very gently, falls apart. So much tenderness they have in their touch… It is indescribable… Our eyes are blissfully watching this moment of delicacy and softness and enjoying every single moment of this beautiful darshan (view). You know, manjari… only our dearest Shyama Shyam, have such delicacy…” Shri Shuk sakhi ju continues: “Look, the soft wind is so playful with their silky curls, making their beauty even more irresistible and bringing us the aroma from their hair. Oh dear manjari, its fragrance is a million times more intense than the smell of the sweetest nectar. So much charm, elegance and sweetness is emanating from them and spreading everywhere… This magical view is hypnotizing us and making us unable to do anything. You know, I am so happy and grateful that we are blessed to stand here together in this beautiful garden with all our dearest friends – sakhis, manjaris, sahelis and sahacharis and gazing at this magical beauty of their rupa madhuri (sweet forms)." The Cartoonist voicing the “Common Man” – R.K Laxman

On the 98th birth anniversary of RK Laxman, we remember the legendary cartoonist who voiced the thoughts of the common man of India.

Published

on

RK Laxman

Numerous people in this world are gifted with various talents. However, there are only a few, who use their talents to leave this world better than what they received it. R.K Laxman, the legendary Indian cartoonist, illustrator and humourist was one such man, who, through his cartoons, gave the obscure common man in India, a voice.

R.K Laxman’s bold, hard-hitting cartoons voiced the problems, faced by the Indian middle class or the lower middle class in a light-hearted manner. His sharp and witty cartoons often had a sarcastic undertone, which went on to challenge the greed and unjust conduct of Indian politicians. He was often showered with criticism by the ones in power for his cartoons offending their misconducts. In reply to one such critical confrontation, he said, “Cartooning is the art of insult and ridicule.” He was popular among leaders and famous personalities for his daunting illustrations and honest representation of real-life issues.

He is, in many ways an inspiration for India’s youth today. Faced with rejections from colleges and newspaper companies, R.K Laxman did not give up his love for sketching and continued to find ways to harbor his talents. He was a well-educated man with a great love for Plato, Socrates and Aristotle. He once mentioned in one of his interviews that, “for cartooning, you need a sense of humour, talent to draw, and a sound education. If you don’t have all three, you can’t become a cartoonist.”

His fascinating caricatures never failed to amuse and entertain. He is most popularly known for his column in The Times of India called ‘You said It.. His well- known sketches of the “common man” captured the essence of the life of an Indian middle- class man. The ironies and paradoxes, his cartoons captured, could be related by common masses and the simplicity of the subject made it even more impactful. His skillful depiction of trivial day to day issues highlighted his expertise as a cartoonist, who was very well aware of the social and political conditions of his country. His other works include The Distorted Mirror, The Hotel Riviera, The Messenger and his autobiography The Tunnel of Time.

Very successfully, R.K Laxman used humour as a tool to bring to light the real-world problems of the 20th and 21st centuries. He travelled the world and worked at different places, gaining knowledge and experience. However, he settled in India and his content was fed by the amusing contradictions of human situations in India. His honest, witty and raw content continues to stun his audience to date.

On his 98th birth anniversary, we bring you some of his most incredible works.
