Panchwa Paratha: The Horrors of Poverty
Bringing to light the harsh realities of the people living in poverty, Panchwa Paratha is bound to keep you up all night.
The reality of poverty is not lost on us, but rarely do we truly factor in the devastating effects of poverty. Hunger and starvation are often considered synonymous with poverty. The struggle of trying to survive is the first one that a person stricken with poverty needs to get over before even considering thriving. Love, friends, and family all take a backseat when your primal urges such as hunger remain unsatiated. And that’s exactly the kind of harsh reality that the short film, Panchwa Paratha highlights.
Panchwa Paratha: A Closer Look
Directed by Sanjay Gupta, the film Panchwa Paratha is set in the early years of India before the horror of the Emergency unfolded. Set in 1972, Kanpur, the film focuses on just one family of four living in rather dilapidated conditions and trying to get by each day with whatever they earn that day. A simple story of a family trying to make ends meet with a happy smile soon takes a turn for the worse as poverty brings out the worst in everyone.
The climax of the film Panchwa Paratha is what is bound to make you stare and ponder out of the window for the rest of the night. The way the director has built up the anticipation to the very last minute and the expression of anguish and sadness on the faces of the actors convey certain emotions so deep that it’s hard to comprehend them in a few words. The beauty of this entire film is the simplicity of it all. With one or two settings and simple dialogues, the film Panchwa Paratha managed to touch even the ruthless and careless hearts.
Keeping everything simple is not an easy ball game especially when it comes to films but making it interesting with characters that carry more depth with their facial expressions than their words will surely make a film a hit. And that’s exactly what Panchwa Paratha did with their exceptional cast and simple dialogues.
Afterword
Panchwa Paratha will arouse a cocktail of emotions in a person. Ranging from pity to sadness to horror, it is bound to keep you on the edge of your seats. A simple act of a poverty-stricken person will haunt you for generations to come.

Aparichit: A Paradox of Sharing Without True Connection
How social media shapes our lives by turning strangers into online connections that feel deceptively familiar constantly
Rahat Jain directed the movie ‘Aparichit’, giving it a title that fits perfectly. The Hindi word “aparichit” means “unfamiliar”, “unknown” or “stranger”. Samarth Garg wrote the story, focusing on modern social media habits. Nowadays, people easily share personal stories on social media. However, we hesitate to make friends in person. We trust Facebook contacts and let them into our personal space. Meanwhile, strangers constantly observe us online and we do not realise it. On the contrary, a stranger entering our physical home makes us uncomfortable. Strangely, we rarely check whether someone is really known to our friends. We often trust blindly.
In today’s digital world, posting intimate life details online feels normal. We share news about relationships and jobs openly. Often, we express thoughts with excitement and vulnerability. Regardless of busy lives and stress, we use social media fearlessly. We hope to destress, but we unknowingly invite more chaos. The symbolic “shelter from the rain” represents escape from life’s pressures. Social media offers this escape, yet it comes at a price. Because of this, we find it difficult to trust people around us. We embrace virtual reality instead. Ironically, we retreat from real, genuine connections. It is easier to communicate with strangers on Facebook. But it’s impossible to interact with our neighbours at home or commuters on a bus. We feel more comfortable sharing with online contacts, not new friends in person. Thus, we exchange meaningful bonds for virtual validation. We find refuge in this when every form of refuge has a price.
The Double Lives of Our Digital Friends
The characters in the movie portray the behaviour of online so-called “friends”. They build connections based on common likes mentioned in their feed. People online show us whatever they want us to see. They could be living double lives; we rarely realise it. We are sceptical whenever a stranger enters our home. We immediately feel fear, suspicion or anxiety. Conversely, virtual strangers know everything about us and we stay comfortable. This paradox shows how our behaviour can contradict itself. We suspect those we see but trust the unseen online. Social media gives a false sense of intimacy. We underestimate how much online “friends” pry into our lives. Although we believe we know them, in reality, we live parallel lives. Their profiles often deceive us.
They can influence our choices and steal our originality. Because of this, we sometimes trust online contacts over our real community members. Our fear of vulnerability drives this pattern. Sharing stories with strangers feels safer than risking rejection locally. As a result, our mental well-being suffers. We risk naivety and manipulation. Real emotions lose meaning as we exist in virtual space. Research shows heavy social media users feel lonelier. Online connections substitute for real relationships, limiting our ability for deep bonds. Nevertheless, human connection remains essential. We need eye contact, handshakes and laughter. Difficult conversations and conflict resolution build real life’s worth.
When Strangers Feel Familiar
The themes highlighted in this short film are the paradox of sharing personal lives freely online while avoiding genuine connection in real life. Social media gives the illusion of closeness and trust with virtual strangers. These connections may be superficial and misleading. Oversharing online opens individuals to naivety, manipulation and the risk of being deceived or exploited. Online “friends” can present false or curated identities and live double lives, making it hard to discern authenticity. The irony of blindly trusting virtual strangers while being suspicious of those we encounter physically. The story warns against the dangers of blindly trusting social media contacts. It highlights the need for caution and awareness in online interactions. The film especially reflects issues of misjudgement and trust among young people in today’s social media landscape. The call to put down phones, participate in communal life and build authentic human relationships.
Therefore, let’s put down our phones and connect with people around us. Let’s attend local events or join clubs. Let’s start conversations with strangers. Instead of just sharing stories, let’s nurture genuine relationships. Now is the time to rethink social media’s place in our lives. We should use it to support, not replace, real connections. Let’s show bravery and vulnerability. Let’s risk building meaningful relationships. The movie highlights the reality for youth today. Young people sometimes misjudge and trust blindly. Importantly, this story educates. It powerfully warns us not to admit strangers into our homes or lives. Indeed, anyone could exploit Facebook references. Ultimately, we must stay cautious in our interactions.

Jalebi: A Sweet Paradox of Life, Choices and Perspectives
Words guide people through life, turning each journey into a sweet jalebi of choices, emotions and shifting perspective.
The movie ‘Jalebi’ was written, directed, produced, edited and cinematographed by Kailas Prasannan. It opens with a depressed employee talking to their employer, where the employer shows a little appreciation for their work and chooses another person for the job over her. There is a display of deep regret and disappointment. The employee blanks out upon hearing the painful news of being let go and replaced. This is followed by a phase of introspection, during which silent thoughts, wonder, shock and doubt cloud her mind. The conversation she has thereafter with a cab driver reveals an entirely different perspective on life. Their attitudes contrast sharply. Both experience solitude, yet one feels alone while the other does not, despite being surrounded by people in a foreign land. People react differently: some feel disappointment, while others find a unique connection.
The very title, Jalebi, symbolises a paradox of emotions, where a person can feel contrasting emotions simultaneously. It all happens in the mind and life is like eating a jalebi. The movie paints a vivid image of picking up a warm, juicy and delicious jalebi. Being fully aware that it is oily, juicy, crispy and heavenly, yet leaves your fingers sticky. Worries arise—should one keep their fingers clean or simply enjoy the momentary happiness of eating this sweet? Negative thoughts about its unhealthiness and the fear of gaining weight follow. People often ignore the brief joy of savouring the jalebi and focus more on the negativity it brings.
Embracing Life’s Contrasts
The cab driver’s words make the passenger realise that everything depends on perspective. Our reactions matter most. We can choose to respond with positivity, kindness, gratitude and purpose. The moment we overthink, we kill the joy of those small, special moments. The cab driver taught the passenger that her choices matter and situations can either break her or fuel her joy. He enjoys changing people’s lives, making a difference one journey at a time. His advice encourages her to stop worrying about small, insignificant things and to allow herself to experience the joys of life. It’s better to find a way of living that you enjoy, rather than questioning your choices by overthinking them.
As he spoke, she felt the weight of her worries lift. Her eyes brightened, no longer downcast. The views around her grew interesting again, the world seemed brighter and she felt alive. That taxi journey and the conversation with the driver changed the passenger’s life forever. In his words, she found the advice she desperately needed. It was an elixir of life, reaching her at exactly the moment she needed it most. His voice was calm, warm and genuine. Every day is a new chance to start all over again, to make a change, to be better. His words were like a gentle stream of positivity that ignited hope within her. It changed her attitude and she decided to take the plunge to fulfil her dreams. She found new confidence and enthusiasm to start again.
Finding Joy in the Journey
His words started to seep into her consciousness. As she reached her destination, she was a different person. When she stepped onto the sidewalk, she saw the jalebi in a new perspective. She felt liberated and realised she had the power to choose her reactions and rise above the seeming doom and gloom. Everything changed from that moment on. The Jalebi is not only symbolic in the title but also symbolic of life’s journey. It teaches us that everything comes with a price and we must be willing to overcome ourselves.
She also learnt that life is a beautiful cycle. Enjoy the journey and cherish the people we meet no matter how brief their company may be. The movie ends with a word of appreciation, which always goes a long way in encouraging one another.

‘Lift’: Life’s Metaphor in Motion
Exploring the theme of how people lift each other through the ups and downs of life’s ever-changing journey.
The movie ‘Lift,’ written and directed by Ida Ali, uses the lift as a metaphor for life’s journey. Just as people join us in life, they move up and down in a lift. Many individuals join at various intervals. Everyone makes adjustments to accommodate each person in the lift, just as in life. Some people become more significant in our lives during certain moments. This points to the theme the movie portrays of accommodation and adjustments, just what life is cherished on.
The lift metaphorically depicts how people come and go in our lives, each bringing their own baggage, thoughts, and beliefs. This highlights the theme of how transient life can be. They leave us when their role or loyalty in our journey ends. This traveling together signifies that, at particular points in life, people become part of our journey, and as we spend time with them, we get to know them better. However, uncomfortable situations can sometimes create distance between people.
The film highlights the importance of maintaining healthy boundaries and avoiding introducing unnecessary individuals into our personal space. This emphasises on the theme of the need of boundaries in every relationship. Boundaries signify a healthy – long lasting relationship. It emphasizes the need to be mindful about what we share with others and what we choose to keep to ourselves. We must respect people’s decisions and choices, and if we learn sensitive facts about someone, it is not ethical to share that information with others. The characters bring out the theme of interpersonal etiquette, in a marvellous, yet subtle manner. This shows that we should refrain from gossip. We should have integrity in what we do or share with others.
The Metaphor of Connection and Distance
The event of getting stuck in the lift signifies the difficulties and shortcomings we may encounter in life. When faced with challenges, each person reacts based on their background and perspective. Some individuals remain absorbed in their own matters, unconcerned about what is happening around them. Others may judge or condemn, those who are simply going through a tough time. Yet, there are a few genuine people who step forward selflessly, to help us navigate life’s hardships. This elaborates the theme of navigating challenges together, being helpful and considerate. Tough times serve as a test of people’s values and loyalty.
The film highlights this theme of principles and faithfulness. True friends and well-wishers are those who stand by us against the world, support us and offer the help we need when circumstances are difficult. These are the individuals who deserve to have a special and important place in our lives. It is only a few people who truly understand how to guide and nurture us through challenging times, helping us recover and find happiness again.
Where Journeys Meet and Boundaries Matter
It is evident that physical closeness, does not bring people together. Misunderstandings, mental or emotional distance is far greater. Even though, the lift was instrumental to bring people to stand and be close and even connect on the floor, in reality mentally, they were in different worlds. It is intriguing to notice the differences in each person as they enter the lift. Some people are engrossed in their phones; others stare blankly, while some engage in quick conversations before moving on.
The ride in the lift can symbolize the journey we take in life—some people enter only to make a quick exit, while others stay longer and show care and concern, yet our journey continues toward our destination. Some people are noisy and enjoy knowing everything about others, whereas others are quiet and unconcerned about what is happening around them. There are those who have a bright smile and sparkling eyes, whose warm aura fills the lift. They exchange friendly glances and happiness, creating an uplifting atmosphere.
The movie celebrates the theme of empathy and support, in every phase of life, be it silent or lively. Just as in life, there are periods of silence when we don’t hear anything from anyone and life feels muted, with no celebrations or wishes. At such times, genuine care and kindness are missed.
The ride in the lift is full of people joining and leaving, but sometimes a special someone enters and everything changes. They bring a spark of kindness, compassion, and love, making the journey of life thereafter, so much better. Lastly the movies conclude with the theme to cherish true companionship. Truth, dedication and virtues of such are hard to find, difficult to keep and heartbreaking to let go. Lucky are the ones who are blessed with true friendship.

Halfway Isn’t Half Effort—It’s Full Commitment.
Halfway is where time meets truth—partners build lasting relationships through clarity, empathy, and commitment.
The short film “Halfway”, directed by Kumar Chheda, is a unique storyline that brings out themes of varied nature. It opens with the emotions of regret of getting delayed and the other waiting anxiously to meet. There are elements of pain and impatience noticed. This movie is an emotional one that shows the unique attachment, connection and foundation of building a partnership. A subtle but profound message is passed on: that everything can be sorted out if only people communicated clearly.
Even though people have been together for a long period of time, they may not be on the same page in their thoughts, which can cause misunderstandings. Clarity is necessary for making any decision. Each person has their version of truth that they are dealing with. Comprehension matters, as each person understands conversations from the perspective and background of their own. This makes them understanding; being at different levels of understanding, they could get it wrong and confuse situations. These minor confusions bring partners to a crossroads in their relationship, which makes them question their very existence in that relationship.
Halfway Is Where Love Learns to Listen.
The themes of time and communication play an important role in nurturing relationships. Time Doesn’t Heal—Understanding Does. Time, distance and miscommunication shape the grounds between two people. It brings out the importance of being empathetic and putting oneself in another’s position. Empathy has the power of stepping into another’s shoes to truly connect. It gives another’s viewpoint clarity and unfolds a whole new dimension to relationships. The Halfway Principle is a philosophy of mutual effort, emotional labour and shared responsibility in love. The Art of Letting Go: The Paradox of Control, vulnerability and emotional freedom. Celebrating fleeting joys, a call to notice and cherish the small moments before they slip away. Choose honest communication and clarity over comfort, even when it’s hard, to build lasting trust.
An important factor in the quality of relationships is always the attitude and the approach that each partner bears. If the approach is in bitterness, then it is possible that the partners would not understand each other. The factor of doubt makes way for confusion. Miscommunication creeps in easily, giving rise to misunderstandings, where emotions of regret are triggered. It shows partners being on different levels in the relationship, as one want to “figure something out” and to meet in spite of the time constraints and wrong landmarks. Unspoken feelings, silence and assumptions unravel even long-standing bonds. It shows that passage of time causes real distance; it is the distance caused in the heart and mind that truly separates people and not physical distance itself. Some partners are ready to bridge the gaps and make efforts to help their relationships grow. Some are unable to meet them at that point.
Let go to hold on stronger.
Life is full of anxiousness and uncertainty. It always feels like something is slipping away under your nose but yet in full view, very subtly but yet so profoundly. Along life paths, we learn some “life-changing lessons”, that holding on tighter never helped and “letting go” is the key. Our life also takes us through these moments where we don’t want to let go, but we have to, sometimes for our peace and sometimes for our freedom. Humans feel vulnerable when they are not able to control situations and that makes them cling tighter in order to feel in control, but in reality, this doesn’t help and only causes more pain.
We learn some valuable lessons through this short film. The first lesson is, “Make Time for What You Love.” Time is fleeting and you will soon feel that relationships are slipping away if not nurtured. It also helps to bring back to memory the good times of the past for a boost. Communicate clearly with your loved ones so that you are at the same level of understanding. Make a decision to build a stalwart relationship for yourself.
The most important lesson here is to come “halfway”. Put in your bit; make the commitment to do the hard work. Contribute all that it takes for you to make your relationship work. Since relationships can never be one-sided, it is wise to meet your partner where they are at. The wisdom lies in the halfway mark. When both partners are sure of their involvement in the relationship, they wouldn’t miss out on the beauty of shared experiences. Reassurance in a relationship is a pillar to show care and concern. When we realise our shortcomings and work on our drawbacks, we will be able to build and maintain good relationships.

In This Life: Rewriting Your Destiny
A movie about time, life, and friendship — an experience of rediscovery that transforms the heart and soul.
‘In This Life’ is a short film directed by Shivam Jemini following the story of two estranged friends. The movie reflects on a common but overlooked experience of our lives. It shows how over time life and other circumstances cause people to drift apart. It beautifully portrays the innocent and empathetic friendships we form during our youth and how they endure through the years. The movie builds up with a mixture of emotions like joy, contentment and satisfaction. The audience experience an intense connection with the actors as the past and present are knit together.
The viewers are introduced to Shiv and Rumsha, two school friends who find solace in one another. They are each other’s support system and help to navigate the complexities of their life. Their friendship provides insight into different views and encourages each other to broaden their viewpoint. In different circumstances they encourage each other. They help build up each other’s confidence and, above all, overcome their fears. The movie also uses colour to depict emotional states. The youthful, hope-filled days of the two are depicted brightly and colourfully. However, after estrangement and hardships, their reality is depicted as more dense and dark. The mood and background are built to show anxiousness with an element of expectation.
The Quiet Transformations of Time
The movie also provides an outlook on how maybe time is necessary for certain situations to fall into place. There is excitement for the viewers to experience “déjà vu” as the characters experience it themselves. Time is a factor for healing, change and definitely a transformation as a whole. As time gives us a new perspective, an opportunity to forgive ourselves and let go of the resentment.
The story uses a natural setting of any ordinary person to implement time as a catalyst for maturity and growth. It is noticed that some things never change, but on the whole situations change, showing the difference. The two characters always help each other in momentary difficulties, which is the crux of the movie as a whole. The foundation of friendship lies in understanding, and therefore the passage of time has no effect on true friendship. The film highlights a common experience — the challenge of reconnecting with a once-close friend after years apart.
The Courage to Start Again
The movie brings out how both matured in their respective ways by acknowledging their past, recognising their experiences and learning from them. Both realise they need to re-evaluate their priorities and refocus on what is truly important to them. Both transform each other, showing that mental well-being is essential for rebuilding and moving forward.
The meeting gives each other newfound hope and strength to carry on. Both of them take it as an opportunity to embrace new beginnings. They realise the truth and reality to alter their lives for the better. The characters approach the future with a more optimistic mindset and reinstate their earlier friendship of navigating challenges together. Their new decisions brighten them and give them confidence to follow their heart and take the right decisions at the right time.
