Naman is intrigued upon hearing the story of his neighbour, the life they’ve built for themselves. He sees a reflection of his principles, values and beliefs. Despite never having seen them, he admires them. His gazing becomes an escape from his mundane schedule, an event to look forward to.

Through the movie, we learn the true definition of love.  “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind”, is truly the meaning of this film. The movie is inspiring, hopeful and overall a meaningful watch.

A movie that perfectly depicts the subdued emotions that come with this state of detachment is ‘Heartstrings’ by Setups & Payoffs Studios. The film captures a couple’s last moments together at the end of their relationship. Their relationship has reached a standstill that neither of them knows how to overcome, though they might want to. How things got to this stage is unknown, perhaps even to them. They are silenced partly by fear of escalation and partly not knowing what to say.

The beauty of ‘Heartstrings’ lies in its silence. The producer, Samarth Garg, provided insights on their approach to this silent story-telling. Being a film with almost no dialogues, they focused on performance, blocking and subtext to convey their message. No dialogues meant everything had to be meticulously planned and executed. The ambient sound is truly spectacular, proving a lot of effort and dedication have gone to this creation. The emotional stance of the characters is conveyed through the background sound. The actors, Snehal Kalpana and Rahat Jain, who is also the director, have delivered a stunning performance as Kalki and Tanmay. Through his experience, Samarth Garg advises aspiring producers to always protect the story irrespective of the budget. As a producer, he advises focusing on taking decisions that serve the narrative instead of compromising it. He also advises trusting your collaborators, which is apparent in his appreciation of his crew.

The director, Rahat Jain, played multiple roles in executing their intended vision. His devotion and sincerity are evident in every role he played. The team have expressed their joy in creating movies that resonate with their audience. They aim to experiment with different tones and genres, refusing to confine themselves. Every challenge they face becomes worthwhile if their films can offer comfort and make viewers feel less alone.

It is often said that “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” The quote rightly reveals how society’s stance directly affects the crime happening around them. Most people live with the belief of overlooking wrong doings to “stay safe”, that any interference would do more harm than good. They turn a blind eye hoping to remain protected. It isn’t so much about not caring what happens to others but more about being too afraid to endanger themselves. So they make excuses or justify their actions to themselves, all the while carrying suppressed guilt.

Does avoidance really keep us safe though? Does turning a blind eye mean we’re protected? Or are we just deferring the danger? Ignoring or walking away from a crime should never be preferred.  Even if no personal harm is caused, turning away is a bigger price to pay. Ignoring offenses mean indirectly supporting them. Even if our intentions aren’t to do so, avoiding action against such acts only encourages them further. It takes one brave person to speak up and spark change, but when silence continues, the problem grows deeper. Real change starts when individuals understand that staying quiet isn’t neutral; it means becoming part of the problem.

Ek Badalav

Ek Badalav is a short film produced by PS Motion films that depicts the social issues faced in a neighbourhood. The movie shows the effects of side-lining issues, avoiding taking action and the ultimate effects of such intimidation. The characters of the film are part of a neighbourhood plagued with injustice and exploitation.  A group of delinquents go about terrorizing the residents, spreading unnecessary fear and insecurity. There isn’t any particular motive behind their actions, except for the illusion of importance and power.

What’s worse though, is that the public helplessly go along with these atrocities. Each too afraid to step in, unsupported by the masses who also fear retaliation. Their silence only perpetuates the offenses, feeding the egos of the perpetrators. Their hesitation is understandable but their lack of intervention only makes things worse. Ek Badalav highlights the issues faced by the common public with its powerful story-telling. The movie has achieved success and recognition across social media platforms. Viewers appreciate the honest depiction of the reality of society and the call to action.

False Sense of Security

The main motive behind overlooking and ignoring these acts is the public’s need for safety. They believe that avoiding intervention means they are out of harm’s way. In truth, it just means they are delaying and intensifying the harm to themselves.
