At 17, Kumar embarked on a journey into acting, starting his film career in Bengali cinema. Noteworthy performances in films like “Alaknanda” (1947)and “42” (1951) under the guidance of renowned filmmaker Debaki Bose laid the foundation for his multifaceted career.
Transition to Bombay
Pradeep Kumar’s pivotal move to Bombay and Filmistan studios marked a significant chapter in his cinematic journey. His breakthrough came with the lead role alongside Bina Rai in “Anarkali” (1953) and with Vyjayanthimala in “Nagin”(1954). These films established him as a versatile actor and became a cultural phenomenon, with memorable songs contributing to their success.
Successful collaborations with leading actresses in the late 1950s marked his Golden Era. His onscreen chemistry with Madhubala resulted in blockbuster hits like “Raj Hath” (1956). The era also saw his collaboration with Meena Kumari in notable films such as “Bandhan” and with Mala Sinha in classics like “Hamlet”.
Pradeep Kumar embraced character roles, showcasing his versatility. His Hollywood debut came with the critically acclaimed “Gandhi”, a movie that went on to win several Academy Awards. He may not have shared the screen with newer heroines of the era, but he left his mark in films like “Sambandh” (1969).
In 1999, Pradeep Kumar was honoured with the Kalakar Award- Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema. This accolade stands as a testament to his enduring impact on the industry.
Legacy and Final Years:
Pradeep Kumar’s legacy lives on through his daughter, Beena Banerjee, known for her character roles in movies and TV serials. His grandson, Siddharth Banerjee, has also ventured into the film industry as an assistant director. The veteran actor breathed his last in Calcutta on 27th October 2001, leaving behind a cinematic legacy that continues to inspire generations.
