Throwback Thursday With The Nightingale of India: Lata Mangeshkar

Truly, one of the greatest musical legends of all times, we celebrate the Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar through some of her most amazing songs.

Lata Mangeshkar

A beautiful voice can soothe an anxious heart, it can comfort a troubled soul and put an insomniac person to sleep. The power of a beautiful voice is aptly portrayed by India’s nightingale – Lata Mangeshkar. A singing sensation and a charming lady, she has recorded songs in over a thousand Hindi films. Dive in and let’s take a look at her inspiring life.

Lata Mangeshkar was born in 1929, Indore, to a classical singer/theatre artist and his wife. When her father passed away at the age of 13, their family friend Master Vinayak took care of them and helped Lata pursue a career in singing and acting. She took lessons in Hindustani Classical Music and she worked on some songs accompanied by small gigs as an actress. She was later mentored by Ghulam Haider, who gave her a major breakthrough in the song ‘Dil Mera Toda’, in the movie ‘Majboor’. She received some criticism on her Maharashtrian accent, while she sang Hindi/Urdu songs, an ordeal she decided to overcome by taking Urdu lessons. An unusual event in Lata’s life stands out when she was poisoned by slow poison. She was bedridden for nearly 3 months and was plagued by fatigue and weakness. She was then closely taken of care by Bollywood lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Undeterred, Lata carried on bravely and went on to sing the famous heart rendering song ‘Aye Mere Watan ke Logon’, which created an emotional and powerful aura that the eyes of the then Prime Minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru, were filled with tears. A versatile singer, she sang 185 songs in Bengali apart from her music in Hindi and Urdu.

It is an honour to have Indians like Lata Mangeshkar among us, who set a remarkable example, not only in their time but for the generations to come.  On this throwback thursday, we celebrate the Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar through some of her most amazing songs.

Throwback Thursday With A True Gem Of Bollywood: Annu Kapoor

We at The Talented Indian wish our unforgettable star, Annu Kapoor – a memorable & an incredible happy birthday.

It is extremely rare, to find people who host multiple talents and capabilities. Even more, so scarce are those who take their talents in different fields and place their craft on a high standard. Among the stars that Bollywood has offered us, Annu Kapoor is one celebrity who has made his flair at being an achiever, his very own personality trait. An actor, director, producer & most fondly as a television host, he is an inspiration for everyone, that if we are dedicated to working hard, success would be right around the corner.

As we celebrate Annu Kapoor’s 64th birthday today on 20th February – Let us look at how a young boy born in Bhopal became a household name in India. He was born in 1956 into tough financial conditions, his family consisting of a Punjabi father & a Bengali mother. Having dropped out of school, he joined his father’s modest theater company. As he turned 20, he joined the prestigious National School of Drama and regularly performed in plays and dramas.

In 1981, while at a play “Ek Ruka Hua Faisla” – the highly acclaimed Shyam Benegal spotted Mr.Kapoor and signed him for his upcoming movie Mandi. The next three decades is history, as Annu Kapoor’s performances spanned not only in Bollywood cinema, but also television shows & soap operas. As the 20th century came to a close, Annu Kapoor had already become a star, now as a mesmerizing host of “Antakshari”, a popular singing talent show.

In recent times, he has won Filmfare & National Film awards for his role in Vicky Donor. He has also gained critical acclaim in many movies like Jolly LLB 2 & Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 etc. Currently, he recollects untold stories of bollywood, as a host in nostalgia shows “The Golden Era – With Annu Kapoor” airing on Mastii TV channel & “Suhaana Safar with Annu Kapoor” on BigFM radio.

Indian Usain Bolt At The Kambala: Srinivasa Gowda

Srinivasa Gowda, the ‘Indian Usain Bolt’ has covered a distance of 100 metres in just 9.55 seconds in Kambala, the annual buffalo race in Karnataka.

Srinivasa Gowda

The ‘Indian Usain Bolt’ broke the internet by his uncommon feat. In a small Aikala village, about 30 km from Mangaluru, a young Srinivasa Gowda recently created the internet sensation by running a distance of 100 metres in just 9.55 seconds in Kambala, the annual buffalo race held in the state of Karnataka.

When the video surfaced on the internet, it took the country by the storm. Why? Because it is faster than the current world record of the eight-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt, who finished 100m race at 9.58 seconds. Some of the people rooting for this 28-year-old construction worker are Mahindra group chairman Anand Mahindra and Minister of State Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju among many others. However, when asked about his newfound fame, Srinivasa Gowda humbly states, “People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field.”

Given his potential, we just can’t help but wonder, what this chap could do with proper training and support. We at The Talented Indian are super proud of him and hope that the future holds the key to all his dreams and success in sports.

Thappad: A Film On Women Empowerment

Thappad, a film by Anubhav Sinha and starring Taapsee Pannu, is an upcoming film on the issue of women empowerment. Click here to know more.

While being a female is entirely biological, it is the social construct which decides what feminine stands for- docile, tolerant, weak, passive, homely and so on. No woman or man is born feminine or masculine, adhering to a particular set of adjectives, but is made to act like one due to societal norms. It is highly unfortunate that violence with women is a common phenomenon in Indian households and women are taught to bear with it, to act ‘feminine’ and to accept the injustice they are put through.

Thappad, a film by Anubhav Sinha, starring Taapsee Pannu as the female protagonist is a film encouraging women to stand against injustice and violence when they are subjected to it. The film is about a woman, who is slapped by her husband, once, and she decides to get a divorce for she firmly believes that he had no right to use his power against her. She is faced by criticism saying it’s a trivial matter, but is it? Who decides the threshold for the amount of violence a woman should be subjected to before she raises her voice? It is essential to fight against violence the moment it arises, to not tolerate the first encounter and to make sure that the message, “not acceptable”, is loudly and clearly conveyed.

A vital step in the direction of women empowerment, the film deserves to be watched and talked about because it is we who decide what feminine stands for.

Remembering The Patriot of Patriots: Subhas Chandra Bose

Today, on his birthday, we bring some of the most historical moments of one of the greatest freedom fighter of India, Subhas Chandra Bose.

Subhas Chandra Bose is a name engraved on the pages of history, of the Indian freedom struggle. He opted to pursue a rather different way of achieving India’s independence. Also known as “Netaji”, he separated from the Indian National Congress in 1939. Following his differences with Mahatma Gandhi, he decided to side with the then enemies of United Kingdom, the Germans. A Free India Radio was set up in Berlin wherein he broadcasted his views. In a brief meeting with Hitler, he was promised a submarine by the Germans. The mission was however not successful but despite the losses incurred, he continued to play his part with full sincerity. He then decided to turn to Soviet Union for help, however his plane crashed at Taiwan and he could not survive the third degree burns.

His commitment to Indian independence, his valor and his determination to see a free India was commendable. He died trying his best to free India from the shackles of British imperialism. Saluting his strong will and the sacrifices he made, I would like to quote the popular Indian slogan he created- “Jai Hind”.

Today, on his birthday, we bring some of the most historical moments of one of the greatest freedom fighter of India.
